The Bomb (Bomber) has arrived

Bomber was found abandoned in the backyard of a foreclosed house, fortunately he was not there very long. A Realtor had been checking weekly to see when the people left the home, once they were gone she went in and found this boy alone in the yard. Bomber is stunningly beautiful, very young (2 years) and very large (over 70 lbs). So far a very sweet and gentle boy. Bomber will have his cherry eye repaired and he will be neutered prior to being adopted. He is up to date on all of his shots. His adoption fee is $600.

This is one sweet boy, unfortunately he has had a very rough life. I estimate he is between 1-2 years old, he is very nice and gentle. He is starved for attention. Currently, he has sarcoptic mange and has an upper respiratory infection. The good news is he his heartworm negative. Once we get rid of those contagious little mites he has we are going to shower him with tons of love. He does need to be neutered and he will be UTD on all shots before being adopted. Sir Gifford's adoption fee is $600.

This picture was taken at the shelter so he looks pretty bad, once the Sarcoptic mange is cleared up his hair should grow back and there will be a smile on his face. I will post more pictures as he gets better.

UPDATE: Paisley had the very painful but necessary total ear canal ablation surgery yesterday, she is still at the hospital as the surgery was more difficult than expected. We are being told she will make a full recovery so in a couple of months she should be ready for her forever home.

Paisley is a sweet little special needs bulldog because she is deaf. When she came to us her ears were completely closed and infected. We are raising the funds for Ear Canal Ablation Surgery so she can live pain free for the rest of her life. Ziggy is about 6 or 7 years old and is an owner surrender. He has a horrible ear infection and staph infection and is being treated for both. Ziggy is the epitome of an English Bulldog, he is wider than he is tall, sleeps most of the day, loves to sun himself on the deck and really, really loves a good belly rub. Diesel is a 6 year old typical stubborn bulldog! He does not like to be told what to do but with some coaxing he will eventually do it. We are told Hank was found as a stray about 3 months ago. It is hard to believe an unaltered male this handsome left his owners and they never looked for him. The people that found him could not keep him and so he is with SABR now, he has been neutered, had palate surgery, is heartworm negative and UTD on all shots. He is being treated for a bad staph infection but that should be cleared up in about a month. He is good with other dogs and children over 10 years old. Hank's adoption fee is $500.

Newest Boy with SABR - Mr. Bugsley! RIP little man!

UPDATE: Mr. Bugsly was very sick, he had pneumonia, heavy heartworms, was emaciated and infested with fleas. He spent several days in the hospital and we found out he had cancer in his chest and liver. Bugsly is now free and frolicking with the other pups at rainbow bridge. RIP sweet boy!

This boy was picked up by Animal Control in Edinburgh TX, it is likely they found him at his home where he was obviously neglected and sick. In order to avoid a ticket the owners surrendered him. As soon as the shelter manager saw him she contacted us and within a day he was safe with his foster family. As you can see he is very emaciated, was flea infested, has skin issues, needs to be neutered, has a bad cough and is heartworm positive. Please consider donating for Ed's care!

Update on Bugs: he has pneumonia and will be staying in the hospital for a few days. Hopefully he will respond well to the treatment and then we can get him to put on a few pounds. Then we can address his heartworms. Please pray for this boy and if you have a few extra dollars to help with his care it is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So you think you want to foster? What does it really take to be a foster for a rescued English Bulldog? It takes commitment, dedication and flexibility. If you are going to foster you really can't pick and choose what dog you get, you have to deal with whatever comes into the rescue. Rescue dogs pee in your house, chew your shoes, nip at children, bark, fight with other dogs.. the list is endless. This is why on the foster application we ask if you are willing to keep the dogs separate from dogs and children. As the Rescue Coordinator I try my best to "match" dogs to the foster families but it is very difficult to do that. These dogs have issues, some are 7 or 8 years old and surrendered by the only people they ever knew. They are stressed out and act out and this is why many times you cannot let these dogs hang out with you like your own pet, especially at first. These dogs need structure and positive reinforcement.

If you decide to foster you will be given explicit instructions. Keep the dog separated at first from all other dogs, introduce them slowly and while both dogs are on leashes. Keep the foster dog on a leash at all times and for the first week the leash is attached to the alpha (foster mom or dad) the dog needs to understand you are the leader, you call the shots. The dog cannot think it is in charge. You will be instructed to keep the dog crated at all times when the dog cannot be directly supervised. This protects the dog from getting into trouble and it also protects your home and furniture.

The reason for the post is not to be critical but to be honest and to make sure everyone completely understands fostering is for the dog not the people. We are providing a temporary home to a dog who would otherwise be put down.

Having said all of that I am very thankful for all of my volunteers! I appreciate those that foster and then honestly realize it is not for them. Thank you for trying. I am thankful for the volunteers who want to foster but can't and thankful for those who do home visits and screen applications to help out. The fosters/volunteers with SABR has are amazing and put up with so much and continue to help the rescue in insurmountable ways. God Bless all of you and thank you for caring for these sweet babies.

Brutus has had quite a bit of attention and we have received a large number of inquiries and applications. Due to Brutus being a young, strong and very active bulldog we have had to be a bit more picky when selecting a home for him. Brutus needs a home with a fenced in yard. He must have space to run and play and get his energy out. Leaving him alone for 8-10 hours a day would not be good either. 5 or 6 hours a day is fine but he has energy to burn and will need someone to be able to let him out. Brutus should not be with children under the age of 10, he occasionally will hump and knock you down if you are too small. Brutus is not quite 2 years old and has quite a bit of puppy in him so his perfect home will need to understand that.

I am not sure why, but during the holiday's more dogs flood our rescues and shelters. For being a time of gift giving and sharing it is difficult to understand why so many people surrender their dogs this time of year, I don't judge, the reasons are the reasons but SABR is filling up very quickly and could really use donations to help these poor babies. The last owner surrender I took in has dry eye, eye and ear infection and had hookworms, these dogs rarely come to us completely vetted. The shelter dogs we pull normally have upper respiratory infections and other serious conditions so please support SABR and help the Bullies get through the holidays!!!

Harli is a sweet girl that was left in the overnight pen at the Harlingen shelter. It appears she was used as a breeding dog, she has double cherry eye, a vaginal prolapse, a skin condition and an ear infection. She in also in heat so her surgeries will not take place for at least 5 weeks. You can still apply and get approved so once she recovers from her surgeries (cherry eye, spay) she will be ready to go. Harli is approximately 3 years old, weighs 54lbs, is housebroken and so far gets along well with other dogs. Her adoption fee is $500.

Mo came to us from Kerrville A.C. Her owners surrendered her in November.Mo had a large cyst above her shoulder,ear problems and dry eyes.. The cyst were removed,her ears are much better and she will need eye drops for the rest of her life. Dr. Young said she was about 5 or 6. The folks in Kerrville told us Mo lived in the garage and the back yard,she has done well in our house. She gets along with other animals and loves attention. Tiggy is a 2 year old spayed Victorian bull dog (English bulldog mix or Olde English) who was left at a high kill shelter. She had a note with her saying they could not afford to keep her any longer. That she is a great dog that gets along with other dogs and house trained. She loves water and will even hop into the shower with you in the mornings if you don’t watch her. She is house trained, crate trained and does well with the two other American Bulls one male and one female she lives with in her foster home. She really needs a lot more attention and would be so thrilled to have a home of her own. She does get fed separate because she seems to be protective of her food at this time.

This little girl is solid as a rock and beautiful. She wants to be close to you and needs someone who would not mind her being a little needy in this area. She just wants to be close. What is the difference between a Rescue and a Shelter?

I received an email last night that really did upset me, it read as follows:

"I was looking at Precious and was interested in her until I saw the (sale price), You are suppose to be adopting these precious animals out to loving family's, you seem to be more interested in what kind of profit you can make. For this kind of money people are going to be more apt to buy a puppy from a breeder or petshop. Bulverde sets a price of $95.00 for any dog they have and that is the way it should be and they have a great turnover because of this. Now you can tell Precious that the reason she is still there and wasn't adopted out is because the shelter lost perspective of what it is suppose to be about. That is such a shame."

SABR is a rescue, we save dogs, we vet them and make them healthy. The dogs we receive in are medical nightmares. They have upper respiratory infections, need palate surgery, spay or neuter, entropion surgery, have dry eye, cherry eye, heartworms, serious ear infections etc. All because of abuse or neglect. Shelters call us to pick up the sick pure bred dogs because if they don't they will get killed. Shelters kill healthy and sick dogs every day. Rescues do not. We treat them. Heartworm treatment can be as much as $800, Entropion surgery or palate surgery $500, ear infections cost hundreds of dollars over time. Tail amputations over $1200. We do get rescue discounts so these prices vary by rescue but the cost of the medical we provide these dogs is never recouped with adoption fees. We actively look for donations and participate in fund raisers to raise enough money to save these poor souls. I am deeply saddened that there is a lack of education out there about what rescues do.

Now, what does a shelter do? They bring in stray, abandoned dogs and kill the ugly, old, unadoptable and sick ones, then they adopt out the rest. These dogs get a rabies shot and a bordatella vaccine and if the shelter has them spayed or neutered you pay for that too. Some larger shelters will spay and neuter them before adoption but the smaller ones don't. It just depends. I can assure you though the shelters do not pay for the surgeries/treatments that a bulldog would need. That is why they call a rescue.

I am not angry about the email, I am actually happy I got it. It shows me that my job is to educate people about bulldogs and the care they require to be healthy and that is what I intend on doing, saving the bullies and educating people.

Bailey is a sweet girl, I am guessing she is 5 or 6 years old and very big for a girl bully. So far she is great with other dogs too. She has really bad infections in both ears and I believe she might have entropion in at least one eye. She is still a bit in shock from leaving her home and coming to a new one but that will pass in a few days once she settles into our routine. Bailey is housebroken, walks nicely on a leash and loves to sit on the couch and watch TV. Her adoption fee is $400.

This is Lily, she is an amazing 5 year old girl who loves to get all of the attention. She will melt your heart in a minute. Lily can be startled easily because she is missing an eye, so it is best to talk to her as you are approaching especially if she is napping. You just don't want to nudge her and scare her. If you do accidently trip over her in the middle of the night, she will certainly growl at you, but if you are calm and talk to her she will stop and go right back to sleep. Lily is HW neg, up to date on all shots, spayed and housebroken. She does have hip dysplasia and arthritis and takes a pill daily to help with this. This medicine costs about $30 every 6 weeks. Coco Chanel is ready to warm up your heart. She's a senior girl who would love a... quiet home to make her own. At eight years old she's well past her puppy stage and prefers short walks and long hours of sleeping at your feet. Coco is not a big fan of grass so a large yard is not necessary. Coco gets along with other dogs and older children. Her foster mom said they haven't seen any cats around so we don't know what she thinks of those. She really loves to be with people and will follow you just about everywhere, she is the perfect companion. Coco will need daily eye drops and allergy medicine. Her adoption fee is $300.00.

Meet Ruby Tuesday, the newest SABR girl. She was found as a stray and taken to Schertz Animal Services. She seems to be a really sweet girl so far, Ruby will be vetted and placed in foster care. Ruby seems to like all dogs, she is not overly interested in playing with them, but she does love all the attention. She loves to have her belly rubbed and loves to try to get in your lap for extra hugs and kisses. She is a very sweet girl. She will go into foster care and we will have her completely vetted and her behavior evaluation prior to her going to her forever home. Her adoption fee is $600.

I received a phone call last night from a woman who found a bulldog and she thought the dog was pregnant and getting ready to have puppies. The volunteers went into action and with one phone call we were in route to get this poor girl. She was in worse shape than I first imagined. She is seriously malnourished, has diarrhea, her stomach is bloated and her gums are very pale. She made it through the night and I took her to the vet this morning, the good news is she is not pregnant but she is so emaciated that her protein is low, she is anemic and very sick and had bacteria in her stool. We have her on antibiotics and she will see the bulldog vet tomorrow.

UPDATE: Hope had to spend a couple of nights at the vet, she could not keep any food down. I felt it was best she had expert care. She is back home with me, she has had a couple of really good stools and has not thrown up at all today!! I am very excited and thank everyone at Marbach Road Animal Hospital in San Antonio for helping this poor little girl. I know she is still sick, but the progress she has made since last Saturday is amazing thanks to them. More to come later!

Hope had to go back to the hospital on Saturday July 23rd. She is still there. She is very sick and they are running tests to determine what is wrong with her. Please consider donating to the rescue to help Hope.

Another update: Hope was up and down the entire time she was with us, she would show progress and then regress. Last night she lost the use of her legs and she was very lethargic. I rushed her to the vet and the very difficult decision was made to let her go! RIP preciouse little girl, I only wish I could have gotten you sooner so I could have made you better. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and donating to help her.

Meet Piccadilly Lily - Adopted!

Meet Piccadilly Lily! Lily came to SABR under unusual circumstances, she is actually an owner surrender who tried to pass her off as a stray, but I found his ebay ad where he was trying to sell her for $500. Lily was immediately placed with a foster (me) so I could observe her behavior, her personality and determine what is best for Lily when it comes to a forever home. Her true colors did not show for a few days, then I accidently bumped her while she was sleeping and let me tell you it was on. She barked, growled and came at me. I was a bit scared but stood my ground and I talked her through it, "it's okay Lily, calm down" etc. I figured out she also does not like to be corrected. I caught her peeing on the rug by the back door and immediatley scolded her and she started to go out the doggy door but ran back in and at me, once again I had to talk her through the situaion. One other incident with flip flop she had chewed up and when I showed it to her I thnk she thought I was going to hit her and she became defensive again. I just talked her through it. For quite some time I was a bit nervous about getting on the floor to romp with her, I was afraid she would get upset, but last night I did it, I took the plunge and Lily and I romped and played and we had no issues. Lily finally trusts me. Without fosters, we could not assess these dogs and be able to find the perfect homes for them. It is painfully apparant to me that she was abused, teased and not very well cared for. I wish I knew her story, but honestly the longer I keep her with me the more I learn about her. She is a very sweet dog, she loves to be the center of attention and get all the pets and kisses, if you stop petting her she will high five you until you continue. She is absolutley precious, all she needs is a patient person who is willing to talk to her when she gets grumpy and not physically reprimand her. Lily is young and healthy, she should not be around children under 10 due to her being startled so easily. But she has no issues with her one eye or skin and she loves all other dogs. She is really a pretty girl and she doesn't even drool! I know it is hard to believe but she really doesn't drool. Lily needs a forever home, won't you consider being the one to give her the best life a dog could have? Her adoption fee is $300.

Yo,whaaatz up! Don't let my manly stature fool you though. I am a big ole' lovabull teddy bear! Guess that's why my foster mom calls me "bear-bear".

Never met a person (large or small), a dog, or even a cat that I didn't like. I am a true ladies man! Hugs and kisses is what I'm all about, so I am looking for my furever home with someone who can stand all of my lovin'. I love to play with kids in my foster home! My ball and my rope are my favorite and don't have a problem telling them it's time for play! I love to go for walks, but don't expect a fast pace. I like to take my time and do my own thing. I will go in my crate, but I will let you know when I'm not happy about it. I am housebroken but I am a little shy about getting my backside wiped. But a little sweet talkin' and it's not too bad!

I have a bad right ear that I don't hear very well out of and sensitive to your touch. My foster family is getting it checked out and giving me medication for it, but I will probably always have ear issues. But it won't stop me from sharin' the love! Titan's adoption fee is $600.

Mikey is a great boy! He is handsome and loves people, especially men. He will follow my husband everywhere, inside or outside. However, Mikey does have some issues with other dogs, we have determined that he gets upset when he is with a pack of dogs. He should only go to a home with no other dogs. He does suffer from slight separation anxiety but he is crate trained and housebroken and just needs to be in a home with structure and a solid routine. He loves to play in his swimming pool and bite at the water coming out of the hose. Mikey's adoption fee is $600.

Dixie was adopted yesterday and she is now in her perfect retirement home. Here is what her new dad has to say about adopting the seniors:

"For those of you who are wanting to adopt an English Bulldog, please do not eliminate the possibility of adopting a senior dog. At first I was wanting a younger dog myself but then I decided to reconsider what I was looking for in a bulldog and I realized that Dixie had everything I was looking for. Hi there! I am Coco Chanel, not the one that created the little black dress but I sure will look cute wearing one! I am 8 years old and was left alone when my owner passed away. Some very kind neighbors took me in along with a large number of other dogs and rehomed us. I have had to have one surgery so far, I had some very rotten teeth from not eating the right food and boy was it painful to chew. I am partially blind, I have dry eye and some mammary tumors that will be removed when I am spayed. I just need a great place to hang out and live out my Senior years so if you think you would like to be that place just lem me know! My adoption fee is $300.

Adoption fees rarely cover the expenses to vet a rescued English Bulldog. Consider Ella, she needs to be spayed, have her cherry eye fixed and her palate shortened. How much do you think you would pay for that if she were your pup? These surgeries would easily cost you $1200. Ella's adoption fee is only $600 and the rescue depends on donations to make up the rest of the money. This is why we cannot reduce our prices or can we offer payment plans. The adoption fee will help us take care of these dogs so we can get them healthy again and get them adopted to great families.

UPDATE: Ella has been adopted by her foster family, they have worked really hard to housebreak her and make her a part of the family. She has bonded with them and they too with her! Congrats to Ella and her new forever family!
Ella is a 2 year old owner surrender, she is very small, 29.8 lbs. Ella has had her cherry eye repaired, she is spayed and had her palate shortened. Her foster mom is still working with her on housebreaking but she is a great little gal. She seems to get along great with other dogs as long as the proper introduction is done and she is good with kids 10 years and up. Dixie Mae is an 8 year old owner surrender. I know, she is an old gal, she has a crusty nose and walks pretty slow, but she is the sweetest little lady I know. It is common in our rescue to get a lot of seniors who need a place to retire and live the good life. Many of these dogs have not had great lives, they have been ignored, stuffed in rooms and only fed once in awhile and their medical needs completely neglected. But the cold, hard facts are that it is very rare that we have a number of young, vibrant and healthy bulldogs to adopt out. Kinsey is the newest pup in our rescue. Kinsey is an owner surrender, 2 years old and very sweet. She loves to be right by your side. Lugnut was a stray picked up here in San Antonio. This guy is a little gem, he is about 3 years old and is in our foster program. Lugnut has been neutered, is heartworm negative, had palate and nose surgery and is learning tricks from his foster mom and dad. After being in his foster home for awhile, we are learning that he is good with other dogs and children however, he is exhibiting some issues and we are reevaluating him, these are not severe issues, mostly how to play nice and not get into mischief!
